Week 1: One week down, seven (!) to go.

Word count for the week: 6,591

Drink of choice: Celestial Seasons Peppermint tea. Granted, it�s been a few years since I�ve consumed mass quantities of this tea. Is it me? Or has the taste improved immensely? Excellent peppermint leaf crop?

Music that made its way into the manuscript: Beth by Kiss. Rock & Roll All Night also, amazingly, by Kiss. Perfect Situation by Weezer. Once In A Lifetime by The Talking Heads. In particular, these lines:

Letting the days go by/let the water hold me down
Letting the days go by/water flowing underground
Into the blue again/in the silent water
Under the rocks and stones/there is water underground.

Landon makes mix tapes for the girls� swim practice and this is the first song on the very first mix. I don�t use the actual lyrics because, in general, getting permission is a huge pain (assuming publication here, if it�s just sitting on my hard drive, it hardly matters).

Darlings I may have to kill at a later date:

• He latched onto the wireless microphone Josh pilfered and serenaded the freshman girls to something by Weezer--something about not being able to get any play from the girls. No play. Landon Scott. Right.
• It was the lighting of love, now smashed and brutalized by Landon. (Yes, I know this is passive voice--sometimes a girl�s gotta do what a girl�s gotta do.)
• �I think they feed Chicken Kiev to the dog.�
• If the car had been a woman, they would�ve run off to Vegas by now and MacKenna would be the proud owner of a brand new step-mom. Thank God it was only a Corvette.
• (After hearing the car referred to as a �her.�) Oh, God, MacKenna thought. It was a woman.
• �She has the soul of crushed ice.�

Stay tuned for the next exciting installment of how Charity writes. Will her word count increase? Will she continue to litter her manuscript with 80s nostalgia? Will she curb her use of the em-dash?
